painting the exterior of your cabin
If your cabin has been exposed to the elements for a number of weeks, start by making sure it is well prepared for painting or staining by using a good quality fungicidal solution or algae remover suitable for exterior wood.
Ensure your log cabin timber is allowed to FULLY dry – this is very important! A few hours is not enough time for exterior timber to fully dry. Ideally at least a few dry, warm days will allow the timber to dry and any moisture to be released from the timber. Not allowing adequate drying time may cause your paint system to fail and possibly crack or blister down the line due to moisture pushing the paint from the surface while trying to escape.
for a solid or ‘opaque’ painted look
Apply one coat of Tikkurila Valtti Primer which is a clear penetrating primer that is absorbed deep into the wood fibers, providing good protection against water absorption and reduces the risk of cracking in the wood and paint layers. Allow to dry fully according to instructions.
Apply two coats of a high quality paint to your log cabin such as Tikkurila Valtti Opaque or Fleetwood Superflex Wood Paint according to instructions.
for a transparent woodstain look
Apply two coats of a high quality exterior woodstain such as Tikkurila Valtti Plus Color water-based exterior woodstain or Tikkurila Valtti Colour solvent-based exterior woodstain according to instructions.
